3 financial tips to help you make a career jump
3 money related tips to assist you with making a lifelong bounce 3 money related tips to assist you with making a lifelong hop It's one thing to choose to make a lifelong hop. It's another to have the way to subsidize that bounce. Funds are one of the most significant variables to consider before arranging a lifelong change. On my digital broadcast When To Jump, I've conversed with numerous business people about how they monetarily figured out how to take the leap. Here are three of the best exercises I've learned.1. Use the assets accessible to youHere's a mystery: different business people need you to succeed! At the point when they began the site creation device Weebly, David Rusenko and Chris Fanini needed to help other people develop their own effective business by making it simple to make a site without past coding and website composition abilities. Truth be told, the venture was enlivened by a companion of the organizers who was endeavoring to make a site and struggling. When we began, it wasn't remarkable that you'd pay $5,000 to $10,000 to assemble a genuine site, Rusenko makes reference to on the sho w. There must be a superior method to utilize innovation to make this simpler and lower the bar for everyone.Setting out to help other people make their fantasies a reality, Rusenko and Fanini were headed to make an asset that would let others make the principal jump (without wearing out their wallets).2. Publicly support and utilize your networkBefore hopping into clothing, Kirrin Finch fellow benefactors Laura and Kelly Moffat worked in advertising and instructing, individually. So when they got into the style game, they expected to do a great deal of statistical surveying for little expense. They started with guerilla interviews out in the open spots to accumulate information.Try to consider innovative approaches to discover data that don't cost a great many dollars, says Laura, including this could enable another independent venture to choose a course without spending a huge amount of money.Furthermore, they stress how incredible crowdfunding assets, as Kickstarter or GoFundMe, can be. On When To Jump, they examine how these stages are an incredible method to initially test the market when propelling a business by letting you evaluate the interest for your item, market to your crowd, and reserve your first creation run.3. Value learning encounters as something of valueEssence proofreader in-boss Vanessa DeLuca left her activity in retail to leave on the not really fabulous way to a magazine profession. At the point when her retail organization moved, she accepted it as an open door to consider what else she could-and truly needed to do.I accepted an immense decrease in salary to begin a vocation as an article associate, says DeLuca on When To Jump. I utilized it as a chance to learn and get as much understanding as I could.DeLuca moved home and went from filling in as a purchaser in retail to making duplicates and going on espresso runs, however says she wouldn't exchange the experience for anything: The espresso and the frivolous money and all that doesn' t make a difference - what is important would i'm say i'm is getting presented to all these splendid editors.Sometimes, making a stride down the rungs (regardless of whether it implies accepting a decrease in salary or moving back home), can be the most ideal decision for ascending the ladder.Looking for additional tips about changing your profession? Look at the When To Jump web recording on Apple Podcasts or any place you appreciate digital recordings. Facilitated by Mike Lewis, who left his agreeable employment in account to turn into an expert squash player, the digital recording highlights counsel from motivating business visionaries and side tricksters who made the jump.

2 Steps For Leading Through Accountability In Your Engineering Career
Engineering Management Institute 2 Steps for Leading Through Accountability in Your Engineering Career January 25, 2016 By EMI What is accountability and why is in necessary in becoming a robust engineering chief? Webster dictionary defines accountability as an obligation or willingness to simply accept accountability or to account for oneâs actions. Letâs investigate both sides of this definition: #1 Take Responsibility on Your Engineering Projects If you need to become a robust engineering chief, you have to take duty in your career. What does that mean? If you're working on a project, or a particular side of a project, you must personal that task. You should tell your group, âI will ensure we plan and design a solid stormwater resolution for this website. That is my duty and I will get it accomplished.â How do you suppose a statement like that can project to others? It will show them that you are assured, you are invested in the project, you're a group player, they usually can count on you. Too many engineers, put their head down and work without taking duty. They figure that if they donât say something, and donât publicly take accountability. Then, if they donât ship, there's much less stress on them and the fallout will be less. Engineers that take responsibility of their careers, often win, even if they donât all the time achieve their targets. This leads us to the following point⦠#2 Be Accountable in Your E ngineering Career Okay so youâve decided to step it up and take full duty for the tasks that you are leading. What happens if you fail? What happens if you're in need of your objective? What do you do next? Strong engineering leaders are accountable once they fail to meet the tasks that they're liable for. Building on the instance in #1 above, an engineering leader would say, âI didnât design one of the best stormwater system. This is my fault and I will work to enhance this design or take what I learned and carry out better on the following project.â An accountable engineering leader might also say, âI take responsibility for this project being over price range. I made some selections in pricing out the job that have been mistaken and I will make better selections next time.â This sounds simple to do, but it is not. In reality, I see many engineering managers pointing the finger at engineering employees when their tasks are over finances. Wrong move in my view. As you strive to go from de sign engineer to engineering manager, and ultimately engineering leader, take duty and be accountable in your profession. You as well as the engineers around you may be glad that you did. To your success, Anthony Fasano, PE, LEED AP Engineering Management Institute

How to Have More Confidence in Yourself - The Muse
Instructions to Have More Confidence in Yourself - The Muse The most effective method to Have More Confidence in Yourself Along these lines, what precisely do you do? another associate asked me while I tasted modest chardonnay at one more one of my better half's work capacities. I took a full breath and prepared myself to let out the canned reaction I'd rehashed so often previously. I work for myself as an independent author, I answered, delaying to investigate the confounded face I'd become so used to finding because of my answer-a face that passes on the messages, Goodness, so you don't generally work and Hello, what's daytime TV like nowadays? at the same time in one straightforward, critical look. Goodness, so you're, such as, composing a book? she squeezed, clearly wanting to get additional explanation on how I figured out how to score a vocation as an expert lethargic individual at such a youthful age. Actually no, not in the slightest degree, I reacted, unpretentiously checking the space for how I could figure out how to catch another glass of free wine without looking discourteous, most of my work is composing vocation exhortation to assist individuals with securing positions they love and afterward prevail at them. She stopped, piece her lip, and afterward took a gander at me as though I had recently spoken Gibberish. All things considered, how would you realize enough to compose that? she asked, How might you offer profession guidance when you don't have a genuine activity? Quickly, I was angered by her inquiry. In any case, not for the explanation you may be thinking. I wasn't disturbed in light of the fact that she had level out offended me and my vocation decisions. I wasn't even all that frantic about the way that she was keeping me from that smorgasbord table of tepid chicken sticks and more wine (okay, that was a bit of upsetting). No, rather, I got myself generally irritated by the way that she had quite recently articulated those pestering contemplations that had been keeping me alert around evening time: How am I qualified to do what I do? How could I go from perusing others' recommendation to composing it? Imagine a scenario in which all that I'm telling individuals isn't right. Call it sham disorder, consider it an absence of certainty, or call it looking for praises. Slap whatever name you need on it, however I'll simply hold nothing back: don't generally have a clue how I arrived. Genuine story: I nearly gagged on my evening Diet Coke the first run through an article refered to me as a lifelong master. In any case, that doesn't change the way that individuals truly tune in and esteem my recommendations and feelings. Significantly more, individuals appear to regard them. Scratch that, not appears, however do. Furthermore, I know this since I get various messages from perusers who approach me for additional exhortation about a particular point I expounded on the grounds that my words associated with them in a manner they hadn't encountered previously. That during a long quest for new employment or an unpleasant day at work, what I said to somebody helped the person in question feel good and prepared to handle the following test. What's more, that is my activity more or less creation individuals feel increasingly sure about their profession decisions and picked ways. While you may not be an essayist like me, I'm speculating you've despite everything experienced comparable sentiments of deficiency now and again. Maybe you as of late moved into an administration job. Or on the other hand, possibly your area of expertise has encountered a lot of turnover, and you're presently the most senior individual there-regardless of as yet feeling like an all out novice. That sentiment of self-uncertainty can be all inclusive. Let's be honest making the progress from being the one posing the inquiries to the one noting them can be weird, and it's generally enough to motivate a powerful measure of self-belittling considerations. Yet, I'm here to remind you (and, as a matter of fact, myself) that-notwithstanding what that basic voice in your cerebrum needs to state you're acceptable at what you do. Furthermore, that implies you're more than qualified to share your insight and your mastery. Consider it along these lines: If individuals are rushing to you to get your musings, bits of knowledge, and feelings, there's presumable a really strong explanation for that-you clearly seem as though you realize what you're doing. Either that, or you're one hell of a persuading on-screen character. Trust me, I get it-there's a little feeling of haughtiness that joins announcing, Hello, I'm extraordinary at what I do! And, I realize that it can feel absolutely unnatural to consider yourself a specialist or an idea head in your picked field. Notwithstanding, in those minutes when you feel like a horrible, no-ability hack who ought to get directions as opposed to giving them-recall that you're brilliant, you're clever, and you have the right to be regarded and praised for the things you know and have achieved. You don't have to know it all so as to know something. Indeed, I'll likely consistently feel enticed to be the first to sneer or feign exacerbation at whatever point I'm alluded to as a lifelong master. But, I'm going to put forth my best attempt to quit avoiding that affirmation and rather own that regard and acknowledgment. Furthermore, I trust you'll go along with me in liking the way that-while you're in no way, shape or form impeccable that doesn't mean you can't be appreciated. Four pillars of people - Viewpoint - careers advice blog Viewpoint careers advice blog
Four pillars of people - Viewpoint - careers advice blog Tea Colaianni reveals the four key areas into which the HR strategy of the entertainment giant Merlin is aligned. Engagement There needs to be a big gap in talent to hire from outside the organisation in our established markets âThe first is maintaining engagement among employees as the organisation grows across countries and cultures,â she says. âIn the past, we have had people engaged with brands and not the group, but not any more,â she says. âWe have jumped from 119th to 15th in The Sunday Timesâ list of the Best 25 Big Companies to Work For, so that work towards engagement is clearly paying off.â Talent development The second area is about talent development at all levels. âWeâre delivering on a promise to grow peopleâs careers and we want to give people internal options,â she says. Merlin is heavily involved in succession planning and leadership development, she adds, âto make sure that we have the right talent coming throughâ. All of Merlinâs six talent pipelines â" finance, marketing, HR, hotels, operations and engineering â" have talent fast-tracks and there are development and assessment boot camps to upgrade people quickly. The pace of development is necessary simply to fill the positions at new attractions as they open. âWe hire 75 per cent internal and 25 per cent external for our existing estate, and itmore like the other way around for new locations. There needs to be a big gap in talent to hire from outside the organisation in our established markets, though,â she says. In terms of external recruitment, Merlin also has an international graduate recruitment programme, which this year is recruiting in South Korea for the first time. Compensation and benefits âThe third focus is compensation and benefits,â says Colaianni, âas we do face competition at the executive level in key markets and we need to incentivise appropriately. Growth We want to draw a link between everyoneâs performance and the performance of the company âThe fourth area is supporting the businessâ growth, which is extra important. We need to make sure that as we open our new Midway attractions, our HR practices are consistent and professional. We will need 5,000 hires in the next three years, for this, and weâve set up a department to support the openings of our new LEGOLAND parks in Dubai, Japan and South Korea to ensure that where thereâs lots of hires they are done well.â Colaianni says: âWe need to empower our people to deliver memorable experiences, and that feeds into who we recruit, how we direct them and how we engage them. We expect people to interact with visitors, and everything we do is with the understanding that it might impact visitors.â Every permanent employee gets a personal development plan setting out their objectives. Each is also eligible for the share save plan (40 per cent of the UK employees are on it and 29 per cent worldwide), and is on a bonus plan that is dependent on the performance of their team, their attraction and the company. âWe want to draw a clear link between everyoneâs performance and the performance of the company,â says Colaianni. âIf theyâre a shareholder, they âown a piece of the magicâ, and thereâs a vested interest in going the extra mile.â If you enjoyed the above blog then you might also appreciate these other articles, which too originally appeared in the Hays Journal: Training at the top Why talented Chinese graduates are aiming high in Dubai Establishing an effective middle management tier Managing external resources Four pillars of people Family values View the Hays Journal online, via the Hays Journal iPad app or request a printed copy from haysjournal@hays.com //

How to Boost Brain Power with These 4 Hobbies (June 2020)
How to Boost Brain Power with These 4 Hobbies (June 2020) How to Boost Brain Power with These 4 Hobbies in 2020 Image Source: iStockHobbies were once regarded largely as a pleasant way of passing the time. But now, scientific research has shown that they not only divert and entertain, they also boost brain power. Whether learning new skills or engaging in long-practiced pastimes, were either creating fresh neural pathways, or exercising the brainâs ability to organise, reorganise and process information, helping it to work faster and more efficiently. There is a vast field of literature on this topic, typified by the best-selling Bouncing Back, in which Linda Graham and Rick Hanson show us how to use powerful exercises that help rebuild our core well-being as well as âdisaster-proofingâ our brains. Image Source: Amazon Check Price There is also much debate about the benefits of such gadgets as fidget spinners, puzzles and other supposedly intelligence-developing executive toys. But for the purposes of this post, we are focusing on just four regular and simple pastimes and hobbies t hat have been scientifically proven to boost brain power. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 1. ReadIt has been proven that reading is the simplest and most effective way to boost brain power. Not only that, it also reduces stress. Reading for just six minutes can reduce stress levels by more than two-thirds. It enhances comprehension, and increases empathy, according to Gregory S Berns, the lead author of a 2014 study entitled âShort- and Long-Term Effects of a Novel on Connectivity in the Brainâ.Berns, who is also the author of Iconoclast: A Neuroscientist Reveals How to Think Differently, and How Dogs Love Us: A Neuroscientist and His Adopted Dog Decode the Canine Brain, found âneural changesâ associated with âphysical sensation and movement systemsâ, that suggested reading of non-fiction could transport you into the body of the protagonist in the book.âWe already knew that good stories can put you in someone elseâs shoes in a figurative se nse. Now were seeing that something may also be happening biologically,â Berns said.âThe neural changes that we found associated with physical sensation and movement systems suggest that reading a novel can transport you into the body of the protagonist,â Berns says. âWe already knew that good stories can put you in someone elseâs shoes in a figurative sense. Now weâre seeing that something may also be happening biologically.â2. Take an Online CourseThe worldwide web is a vast repository of educational portals that collectively form an invaluable resource for entrepreneurs unable to commit to a full-time course of learning. There is a huge range of possibilities on offer, from the quick bite-sized knowledge hits of Brain Pump to more intensive online courses on offer at ALISON and edX.DuoLingo, for example, promises users that you can learn a language for free. Its lessons are underpinned by gamification, offering a variety of speaking, listening, translation and multiple-choice challenges.Just some of the neural benefits of bilingualism are clearly set out in this a TED-Ed talk given by Mia Nacamulli. As Lizette Borreli pointed out in a post for Medical Daily, âbilingualism may not necessarily make you smarter, but it can keep your brain healthy and activeâ.So if for some reason you are seriously stuck on the question of how to boost brain power, AGENT canât think of a better and more effective response than directing you to a course on DuoLingo. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 3. Brainteaser WorkoutsWhile the notion that crossword puzzles have a positive impact on brain activity is inconclusiveâ"âthereâs no evidence that doing a crossword puzzle will keep you out of a nursing homeâ, says Dr Kenneth Langa of the University of Michigan Medical Schoolâ"even skeptical scientists conclude that any mental workout, especially combining it with a varied range of others, including Sudoko, âwill produ ce changes in those neural systems that support acquisition of the new skillâ.For diehard âcrossword onlyâ fans, Dr Michael Merzenich suggests that you should set a time limit, or record the length of time it takes to complete, if you want to make your daily crossword puzzle challenge your brain a little more. You might also consider the occasional move out of a âsimpleâ level puzzle into more challenging cryptic crosswords. Just as you succeed in physical fitness by raising the bar in the gym, the best way to boost brain power through simple mental exercises is to incrementally increase the difficulty of the tests over time.4. Play a Musical InstrumentIn this revelatory TED-Ed Talk, educator Anita Collins says that while listening to music makes multiple areas of the brain more engaged and active, playing an instrument makes that activity more like âa full body-brain workoutâ.The connections between music and neural activity have been actively probed and exp lored for the past two decades, across multiple categories. Of particular interest to AGENT readers will be Daniel Levitinâs This is Your Brain on Music, which explores how our brains process music. Image Source: Amazon Check Price The overall research areaâ"including studies of the impact of music education upon general brain development in children and adults; links between singing and playing music and improvements in reading skills among disadvantaged children; as well as research into how music can be used to assist people with brain injuries, physical trauma or disabilities to improve physical and cognitive functionâ"is fascinating, and TED-Ed has devised a core of links to the key texts and audio-visual materials here.

Want to get hired Lie. Or, dont lie. (seriously)
Want to get hired Lie. Or, dont lie. (seriously) I was reading an interview on TheJobInnerview.com with Lou Adler. Lou is well-known in the recruiting space. You can read his interview at the link but heres a snippet that caught my eye: Me: What would you say are the top 3 most common attributes/similarities you note in job candidates you hire? Lou: Candidates that are confident, donât mislead or fabricate, and ask solid and insightful questions. Okay, three things that are common in people that Lou, a hiring expert, hires: Confidence Dont mislead or fabricate Good asker of solid and insightful questions. Wait, whu?? Seriously, of all of the attributes of successful hires, 1/3 of them is stating that the people DONT LIE? I get the other two be confident, be smart hm, maybe there were other things, like able to communicate their expertise, good hygiene, heck, even if he said they were all college-educated I wouldnt be surprised. But the fact that Lou felt like adding such a negative, horrible thing makes me wonder how prevalent this issue of lying (aka, misleading or fabricating) really is! Seriously, if that is what we are coming to, we have issues. Checklist for doing well in todays interview: __ Act confident (but not overly confident __ Try really hard to not lie or embellish __ Ask smart questions at the end As Homer Simpson would say: Doh!! All I know is I hope Lous experience, and response, isnt influenced by anyone who uses JibberJobber! Were smarter than that! Want to get hired Lie. Or, dont lie. The Essential Building Blocks for Women in Business to Thrive
The Essential Building Blocks for Women in Business to Thrive Women In Business Stepping out into the business world is a daunting prospect, but the lure of a potential success is too great to ignore. A staggering 42% of businesses fail because there is no market for their product. But even with the right product, there are still a few boxes to tick before relying on the business as a steady flow of income. Discover a few essentials to get and keep that business running. Cash Flow Is King Although itâs true that business owners need to spend money to make to make money, itâs important to leave the shopping sprees for later. Spending money on the business should be directly related to the operations of the business. Not only is cash flow critical to internal processes, it is also the top reason for business failure. Lack of Business Continuity Owner-operated businesses stand the risk of closing down when something happens to the owner. This is not only in the event of death but also when the owner becomes ill. This means having a proper business plan that details the succession plan for the business. It also means training up the right staff to take over when the time comes. Business continuity is also critical when things shut down, such as power failures, service provider interruptions, and even natural disasters. Manage Unexpected Personal Expenses When leaving the corporate environment, itâs important to not forget to replace those benefits. This includes proper retirement planning, insurances and more. Getting the right insurance is essential for self-employed people. If this is not in place, it places a huge risk on the business in the event of a medical emergency. Furthermore, it also allows the owner to take the time to improve their health condition without rushing back to the business. Put Yourself Out There Thanks to the number of women who have broken through the proverbial glass ceiling in the corporate world, the business world is slowly responding to this. This means that women in business have a great chance to leverage their strengths and create their brand. It also means that they are able to communicate their value proposition well to their customers, which is a critical building block. Sound governance and ensuring all the paperwork is up to date are two more aspects business owners should look into to ensure theyâre on the right track. Take the time to get it right, as there might not be enough to do it over.

Personal Branding Interview Bob Garfield - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Personal Branding Interview Bob Garfield - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke to Bob Garfield, who is a columnist for AdAge and the author of his latest book The Chaos Scenario. In this interview, Bob talks about his new book, his opinion on the impact of social technologies on media, where radio and TV will end up, and his future media outlook. What is the The Chaos Scenario? Why should be people care about it? The Chaos Scenario is frighteningly simple. Mass media and mass marketing collapse under the weight of the digital revolution. Thats happening already, and is irreversible. Meantime, a digital world evolves to create new and different and in some ways superior sources of news, information, entertainment and culture. This, too, is underway. Alas, the collapse of the old model will create devastation such as the death of the newspaper industry and broadcast TV long before the digital world is evolved enough to take their place. What do you think about the impact of web technologies on media? How has it impacted your role as a journalist at AdAge and NPR? The answer to the first question is: murderous. The internet and other expressions of digital technology have fragmented audiences so dramatically that media do not have the critical mass of eyeballs to generate ad revenue to fund the content theyve been providing free or heavily subsidized for 3 1/2 centuries. Secondly, digital technology has given us all the ability to avoid ads, which, given that opportunity, almost everybody does. The digital world has lowered the barriers of entry for creating content to pennies, which means Courtney, the 8th grader, is literally competing with CBS and the New York Times for audience. Finally, the near-infinite supply of content creates a near-infinite supply of advertising inventory, which severely depresses prices, which means that nobody makes enough money to underwrite high-quality content. As for me, I have two media jobs. So I am doomed. Will TV and radio even exist in the future? How can journalists/reporters/producers and people outside of the media industry prepare for this? TV and radio transmitting radio signals from local towers? No. How can we prepare? You might as well ask a cobbler how he prepared for the Industrial Revolution. What is your opinion on Chris Andersons book Free? Do you think that will be the new advertising model? Im embarrassed to say I havent read it yet. I can say this: free is a fact of life, but for very few categories of commerce can it represent a viable business model. Can you name your top 3 predictions for the future of media? How will they effect our lives? The Death of Mass Media. Period. Consolidation in every community and a competition for who can be the local hub for news, information and culture. A new legal framework for fair use that will define the future of aggregation.and therefore dictate who will triumph in the local-audience land grab. Journalism is essential to democracy, but it is also expensive. Someone will fill the vacuum. If it is non-profits and other do-gooders, great. If the vacuum is filled by governments or partisan groups, democracy is in great trouble. - Bob Garfield is a columnist, critic, essayist, pundit, international lecturer and obscure broadcast personality. He isnât exactly a media whore, but heâs extremely promiscuous. He is the author of The Chaos Scenario. Garfieldâs âAd Reviewâ is a prominent feature of Advertising Age, where each week he singles out an ad for praise or ridicule and thus has become among the more pitifully groveled-before figures in trade-magazine history. For many years, Garfield was the advertising analyst for ABC News. Heâs been a regular on Financial News Network, CNBCâs âPower Lunchâ and âAdam Smithâs Money Gameâ on PBS. He also has been quoted by every major American newspaper, news magazine and broadcast news program, owing to his fearless willingness to speak authoritatively on subjects he doesnât necessarily understand.

Standing Behind Your Brand Confidence is Key - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Standing Behind Your Brand â" Confidence is Key - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The best support you can offer yourself is confidence. Without belief in what you do and what you represent, you cant successfully project a personal image that attracts customers. This confidence comes from an innate belief in your own worth as a person and as a product. It is the key to progress since it not only affects your relationships externally but also how you perceive and react to the world around you. Confidence is Key What is a personal brand if not an external valuation of your own self-worth? It is literally a projection of how confident you are in yourself. Now that its necessary as a way to increase your overall value alongside the value of the product youre producing, its even more important to begin garnering as much confidence in yourself as possible. Though some people seem naturally born with an unwavering belief in their potential, the vast majority have at least a few hang ups that make them doubt themselves. Through social media, however, these weaknesses can be hidden from sight. Before the days of the online persona, confidence had to be mastered physically as a means of projecting your persona onto others and attract those that saw your value. Nowadays, you can come up with rehearsed posts to send out that glisten with belief in yourself no matter how scared you are when you make the post. Luckily, humans are extremely adaptable. Therefore, the more you post confidently, the more confident you will become mentally. Its pretty much faking it until you make it a reality. On that same note, remember to steer clear of self-depreciation. It may drive you crazy because you want to point out all of your own flaws to avoid potential criticism, but do not give in to this desire. Those with self-confidence dont waste their time worrying about small mistakes. They continually working toward making the next time even better. Live by the Brand Whatever your brand, believe in it. Itâs you. You are unique. And, only you can deliver on actions and corporate brand promises in the way thatâs uniquely you. If people meet you and find a very different person than what they experience through any other medium or interaction, theyre going to feel deceived and rightly so. Your brand, after all, should be an extension of your true self. It might be a bit more exaggerated but it should nevertheless be an accurate portrayal of the real you. Your personal brand is the culmination of every great quality that sets you apart and makes you an asset. Not living this way labels you a fraud. So how do you avoid such a trap? Without a doubt, learning real confidence is a challenging feat to master. The first step is assuming the language you use on social media. Because language directly affects how we perceive ourselves, its the fastest way to remove the disconnect between our online brand and our actual persona. Start talking as positively as you type and eventually that positivity will become your default way of acting. From here, everything else will fall into place. Once you speak confidently, youll believe in your confidence. Once you believe in your confidence, youll begin acting with the natural ease and charm that those with true belief in themselves exude. Recently, I interviewed Nicole Wright, actress, director and co-host of Super Geeked Up (Super Geeked Up is seriously THE Geekiest Show Online! Join the SGU crew as they discuss your favorite sci-fi, fantasy, superhero, and geeky topics and play super-fun games!) She shared this about personal brand self-confidence â" Nicole: Ive always thought of myself as awkward. I was one that one kid that was super hyper, silly, loud and out there. I wrote a sketch for my high school Spring Production called Bergetha the Bunny. It was probably the weirdest and most hilarious thing I ever came up with in high school. I was dressed in a bunny/panther suit (long story), strumming an out-of-tune guitar and singing about animals who had sadly passed on. Literally the entire audience was laughing and on the floor and this sketch got me in the yearbook and notice for a college scholarship, I kid you not! I realized that this was who I am and started embracing this awkward side of me and branded myself as Nicole the Awkward. I had a blog and vlogs where I told awkward stories and came up with awkward character sketches. It was really fun and it was a space that I felt completely myself! The sad thing is, I allowed others judgment of me to squash out this part of me that made me different and unique. And I became extremely critical of myself and extremely self-conscious. It wasnt until a few years ago when I started feeling more confident in myself and allowed myself to embrace the awkward again. The parts of ourselves that are awkward are also the things that make us unique and stand out and become our signature brand. Allowing others to convince me to be something other than who I am was hurtful and damaging. Thankfully, there are some very positive people in my life who helped me reclaim my awkwardness! Not only is it important for you to be confident in yourself and not be ashamed of all the little quirky things that make you different, but its also important to surround yourself with positive people who encourage you, support you and push you to be the best version of yourself. There are three huge things that have helped me embrace my brand. The first is my husband. He is my number one supporter, always encouraging me to pursue my dreams and be confident in myself. The second is my family and friends. And last, but certainly not least, is my Super Geeked Up family. Being a part of this team of lovable weirdos is one of the best things to have happened in my life. Not only do I feel that my awkwardness is supported, but it also gives me a platform and a space to encourage and connect with others. I have a passion for making a positive difference in the world and this brand gives me the platform to do just that by being able to connect with and encourage others all over the world that have similar passions and interests. Your brand also gives you a platform to make a positive different in the world around you. Being confident in yourself and your brand is important but whats even more important is that you come at it with love and genuineness. We all are looking for ways to connect with others and the world around us. I know for me, when I see brand that is authentic and genuine, I cant help but gravitate towards it and the people involved and look for ways to connect. Keep Trying New Things Confidence can become stale over time if you fall into complacency. Should this happen, even your online brand will suffer the consequences. As a preventative measure, continually force yourself to do things energize, excite you and even challenge you. Do you hate networking? During the next event you attend, make a connection with at least one stranger and build from there. By doing new things, you probe the boundaries of your potential. Its succeeding with the scary things that show you all youre capable of, and the longer this list is, the stronger your confidence becomes. As with all things, however, remember to be cautious of going too far. Self-confidence in a personal brand is essential for attracting people but being too confident repels them just as easily. So long as you remain open to criticism and always seek to improve your identified weaknesses, youll be able to walk the precarious line between humility and pride.

A guide to workplace personalities by Blue Planet II
A guide to workplace personalities by Blue Planet II This post was written by a member of the Debut Contributor Network. Using the magic of Blue Planet II, Charlie Duffield gives us a crash course in workplace personalities. Way back in 2017, the undisputed grandfatherly don of wildlife television, Sir David Attenborough, graced our screens with the spectacular Blue Planet II series. Camera crews offered unparalleled footage of life brimming within our earthâs oceanic depths, whilst Attenborough contributed his warmth and wisdom via voiceover to spectacular effect; the programme was deservedly the most watched of the entire year with more than 17 million viewers. As we set sail into a new year, January offers a very different connotation of âthe bluesâ, with the return to real life and responsibility after festive downtime. But if Blue Planet II taught us anything, itâs that weâre more interlinked with the ocean than we think, and marine life need not feel so far away⦠Hereâs a reminder of some of the defining protagonists seen on screen, cross examined with some familiar workplace personalities youâre bound to encounter back in the office. The Sea Otter As the heaviest members of the weasel family, these playful marine mammals eat 30% of their body weight a day to sustain themselves. Having once faced near extinction, theyâre now so populous they can form rafts amongst themselves, and even fall asleep holding paws to prevent them drifting from each other. In your office With highly developed social skills, extroverts thrive in office environments and the constant human interaction provides a lot of scope for tomfoolery. Every office has a quasi-comedian character the office joker. Theyâll use any excuse to initiate distraction in exchange for a barrel of laughs or suppressed guffawing, all for the sacred cause ofâ¦âbanterâ. But just as the fun-loving sea otter plays a vital role in maintaining kelp forestsâ¦well, the office ecosystem would be inordinately drab without them. The Tusk Fish The Blue Planet II team became so fond of their tusk fish they named him Percy the Persistent. They filmed this ingenious fish swimming to the edge of the reef in search of a small clam for brekkie, before spending an hour relentlessly bashing the clam repeatedly on rocks until it cracked open. Thatâs commitment. In your office Pure and simple, the heads down hard grafter. They know that nothing great is ever achieved without hard work, and always deliver the goods. The Sperm Whale No snickering at its name please These gentle giants are owners of the biggest brains on the planet, and use sonar signalling to effortlessly hunt for squid in the murky ocean depths. In your office The clever clogs; the IT whizz, speaker of twelve languages fluently, video ninja or PowerPoint extraordinaire. These supremely skilled experts possess niche talents which regularly blow your mind. Thereâs no such conundrum as âtransferableâ skills here, just employees with real market value and pragmatism. Their showmanship may be understated but everyone knows theyâre the revered masters of the workplace. The Clownfish Youâll probably recognise these aquatic animals, but did you know the saddleback clownfish is an especially talkative fish? They spend all day noisily communicating amongst their clan to protect themselves from the many predators, such as coral trout, hunting around Southeast Asiaâs reefs. In your office Gossip Girl 101 calling. Nothing beats a solid natter by the water cooler, in the lift, en route to another unnecessary meeting, loitering by your desk. If youâre having a lonely sort of day, youâll be grateful for the office chatterbox. But when your workload hits peak intensity, youâll want to by-line the in depth chit chats about your lunch choices and neighbourâs love life for productivityâs sake. Just donât underestimate their ability to diffuse office based awkwardness and tension like a pro with their gift of the gab. The Octopus An eight-armed mollusc thatâs able to change colour and shape shift? It might sound more like a beastie conjured up within Harry Potterâs universe, but the fearless female octopus dwelling in South Africaâs green seas is far from fictitious. Whilst being attacked by a pyjama shark, sheâs filmed fashioning a shell suit for herself, and successfully outwits her predator whilst being applauded as an utter rock star by the doting crew. In your office They might not have eight tentacles, but theyâre still able to juggle a million errands with ease. Their plethora of skills and quick-thinking mind-set ensure that the multi-tasker is a force to be reckoned with. There are many more personalities lurking within our water depths to explore, and every creature, great and small, has their part to play. When the Blue Planet II team camped out to witness the awesome strategic planning of sea lions hunting yellow fin tuna in the Galapagos Islands, they showed us how even sea animals intuitively understand that team work makes the dream work. Nevertheless, if you watched the entirety of the series, youâll recall the heart-breaking final episode exposing the suffering humans have inflicted on our seas and the bountiful life within them. Perhaps your new yearâs resolution is to do your bit for ocean conservation. Cut out single-use plastics and only eat sustainably-caught seafood, if at all. And whilst youâre saving the great seas, it pays dividends to cast your net a little wider; in the annual schlep back to work, remember that just like the oceans our sensitive office eco-systems, and the multifaceted teams within them, need preserving too. As David Attenborough concluded, âthe future of humanity, and indeed life on earthâ¦now depends on us. Images via BBC Connect with Debut on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn for more careers insights.
